Swim Lesson Group Descriptions

These group descriptions and ages are meant as a general description of the skills and instruction provided in the lesson. Please select the group that best fits your swimmer. If the incorrect group is selected, staff will do their best to move the swimmer to an appropriate group, but we cannot guarantee availability in that group. If you are unsure which group to select, please email sean.barry@bisd.net.

Parent & Tot (ages 9 mo - 2 year old + parent)

Parent & Tot is a calm class designed to provide your family with a positive and safe introduction to a swim lesson environment. Instructors will provide you with tips on how to develop comfort and confidence in the water with your little ones. Parents do most of the handling of their child in the water and instructors are there to assist parents with the techniques in order to empower them to guide their child's earliest aquatic experiences. As they become familiar with aquatic breath control, buoyancy, and movement in the class, you will also be preparing to make the transition into the next level of the Swim Lessons program. As an added bonus, studies show that baby swimmers develop better balance, movement, and grasping techniques than non-swimmers.

A parent, guardian, or adult must enter the water and participate with the child.

Each session is 1 week, with lessons Monday - Thursday for 45 minutes each day.

  • Directions/Parking
    • The Belton Swim Center is located at 600 Lake Road in Belton, TX. Patrons should enter off of Sparta and drive behind Tiger Field and the baseball/softball fields. Once through the student parking lot, you will see the pool straight ahead. It is directly behind Belton High School.
    • Parents may park in the Swim Center lot, or the student lot located adjacent to the swim center. Parking is on a first come, first served basis.
  • What to Wear
    • Swimmers who are potty trained should wear a swimsuit and goggles that do not cover the nose. (Parent & Tot swimmers do not need goggles).
    • No swim shoes. Swimmers must be barefoot when they enter the water. Swim shirts are ok, but must be lightweight and not traditional tshirts.
    • Swimmers who are not potty trained MUST wear a reusable or throw away swim diaper. Regular diapers are now allowed.
    • The Swim Center does not offer swim diapers, participants must bring their own.
  • What to Bring
    • Goggles (that do not cover the nose), Swim Suit, Towel, face covering, and non-slip sandals or shoes.
    • We ask that all pool toys be left in the swim bag, or at home during the lesson. We will provide all equipment necessary for the lesson.
  • When to Arrive
    • It is recommended that you show up 5 minutes before the lesson. Lesson swimmers will be in the small pool at the west (American flag) end of the pool. When parents arrive they can proceed to the small bleacher on the north (near the back door) end of the teaching pool. Lessons will begin promptly at 6:15PM. It is always a good idea to have the students dressed and have gone to the bathroom before entering the pool.
    • Classes will start on time. Late swimmers will not be permitted to make up lost time in another class or session. Please be on time to maximize your lesson.
  • Spectators
    • Parents are welcome to stay in the small bleachers next to the teaching pool. We would like to note that swimmers often do better with the lessons if their parents are out of site. You are always welcome to sit in the large bleachers during swim lessons as well.
    • We ask that unless the instructor asks for your assistance, please stay in the bleachers and try not to interact with the swimmers during the lesson.
  • Cancellation and/or Bad Weather
    • If the pool must close due to weather or maintenance, we will attempt to reschedule the cancelled lessons for the Friday of the same week.
    • However, there is no guarantee that it will be rescheduled.
    • An email will be sent out with detailed information should we have to reschedule or cancel.
  • Student Sickness
    • Lessons missed for illness or other activity will not be made up or refunded. Only lessons cancelled by the swim center will be attempted to be rescheduled.
  • How will I know if they need to progress, or sign up for the next highest group?
    • At the end of the session, the instructor will go over the swimmers “report card” and send it home.
    • The report card will include the instructor's recommendation for next steps: next level up, preteam, etc.
  • My child is younger/older than the age listed, but their skill level is in another class. Which one should I sign him/her up for?

Ages are listed for reference, some swimmers may fall outside of those age ranges. Class should be selected based on skill level described. Have questions? Contact Sean Barry sean.barry@bisd.net.

We do our best to describe the skill and age level recommended for each class. Please read the information carefully and decide which level to schedule. If you have questions, or need assistance, contact Sean Barry sean.barry@bisd.net

  • I signed my child up for one level, but the instructor told me to sign up for the next level up. What should I do?

Email Coach Sean (sean.barry@bisd.net) and inquire about moving classes after having already registered/paid. We will do our best to move and place you in the appropriate class at the same time. However, this is limited to class availability.
